Jerome Jernigan LaDay, a cherished member of the East Oakland community, was tragically killed by a hit and run driver on April 18, 2025, at the age of 44. Jerome was an avid bicyclist, commuting to work in San Francisco from his home in East Oakland using his bicycle and BART. He also participated in the Traffik Boyz bicycle group, where he mentored youth on bicycle safety.
Jerome was known as a beacon of positivity and reliability. His friend and employer, Justin Gray, described him as a "standup guy" who always had a smile and brought joy to those around him. At home, he was the primary caregiver for his mother, Sharon Jernigan, who raised him as a single parent and now faces mobility challenges.
In the wake of this senseless tragedy, the community has rallied to support Jerome's family. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and provide financial relief to his mother during this difficult time.
Jerome's friends from Traffik Boyz/Traffik Girlz and Phixed Kings Expeditions gather around his ghost bike before installing it.
