Every week Steve rode his bike for weekly game of Go at a cafe on Broadway. He was known to bring extra Go equipment so others could play and to help teach beginners. After his Go game on July 21, 2024, Steve was on his way home when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Steve, 69, was a U.S. Navy veteran and was passionate about improving cycling infrastructure and street safety in Oakland. He was an organizer with the Tenant and Neighborhood Councils (TANC), which protects tenants from aggressive landlords. His friends remember him for his deep sense of justice and his desire to make the world a better place for others.
