Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, Robert was riding his bicycle northbound on Shafter when a motorcycle headed eastbound on 51st struck him, causing serious injuries. Robert died that evening at a hospital. He was 70 years old.
Robert's original ghost bike went missing sometime after May 2022. A replacement was installed in May 2025.
