Matthew was commuting on his bike from his home in North Oakland to his job in Emeryville as an audio engineer. While crossing Powell near Vallejo Street, Matthew was struck and killed by a Ford F-150 truck driven by Patricia E. Humphrey.
Matthew, 34, left behind his wife and their then 2-year old. He was a talented bass player who left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
The killer, Patricia E. Humphrey, was driving without a valid license and yet only fined $211.
No safety improvements have been made to the intersection since the incident over 20 years ago.
Sometime after 2020 Matthew's original ghost bike went missing. It was replaced December 2024.
